A Glimpse into Father’s Day in Italy: St. Joseph’s Day

While Sri Lanka celebrates Father’s Day in June, most European countries like Italy honour fathers on March 19th, known as St. Joseph’s Day. This day honours Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and the ‘foster father’ of Jesus Christ. Known for his noble spirit and profession as a carpenter, Saint Joseph is regarded as a symbol of fatherhood and is the patron saint of fathers and workers.

In Italian culture, St. Joseph’s Day is a significant religious and family holiday, and much like Father’s Day in Sri Lanka, St. Joseph’s Day involves enjoying a festive meal with family. Traditional dishes include Bignè di San Giuseppe – fried cream puffs filled with custard and rolled in powdered sugar that can be found around Italy year-round, but most prominently around Father’s Day. Many towns and cities hold parades and religious processions in honour of St. Joseph. They set up tables with food and special gifts, placing a statue of St. Joseph at the head of the table, surrounded by all the offerings. Additionally, in keeping with St. Joseph’s legacy of care and compassion, many people engage in acts of charity, helping the less fortunate.

Bridging Cultures Through Celebration

Celebrating Father’s Day at AQUA Forte in Sri Lanka is not just about enjoying a delicious meal; it’s about creating a bridge between cultures. By dining at this top Italian restaurant, you can bring a touch of Italian tradition to your celebration, honouring the spirit of St. Joseph’s Day while embracing your Sri Lankan heritage while in your homeland.

So this Father’s Day, make it a truly international affair. Show your dad how much he means to you with a dining experience at any one of our AQUA Restaurants, and perhaps share with him the rich traditions of St. Joseph’s Day in Italy. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the universal love and respect we hold for our fathers.
