The South of Sri Lanka is a tourist’s paradise and home to some of the most breathtaking attractions in the country. While, there are many things to do during your stay, we’ve thought of pinning down our top five favourite blocks places to visit at down south Sri Lanka.

Whale and Dolphin Watching in Mirissa

Mirissa is a premiere spot for whale and dolphin watching, which is one of the main attractions in the area. The best time to visit would be from November and April, as there will be a high chance of spotting these beautiful ocean creatures near the port of Mirissa. This whole experience takes 4–5 hours, and you can book this excursion through a tour company that offers whale and dolphin watching packages. Experience a little sea safari on the crystal clear sapphire waters of Mirissa.

Yala Safari

Escape to the wilderness in Yala and immerse yourself in some of the best Sri Lankan wildlife. Explore national parks and take a safari to witness some amazing sloth bears, jackals, sambars, elephants, crocodiles, exotic birds and of course, leopards. Yala National Park is known to have the highest density of leopards in the world, so there’s a great change of spotting these beauties out in the open. The best time to visit Yala would be from February to June.

    Exploring Bentota

    If you’re an adrenaline junkie with a knack for adventure, then you should definitely make your way towards Bentota. With a wide range of activities like river safaris and boat rides through a thickly dense mangrove forest, you are surely bound to spot wildlife such as crocodiles, water monitors, and exotic birds.For some action-packed entertainment, engage in water sports in Bentota.     Surfing should definitely make it in your Down South bucket list as it is one of the best activities to do in the South of Sri Lanka. Beginners should check out Weligama and Hiriketiya, while advanced surfers should make way to Mediha and Polhena.

    Walking Through and Sightseeing in Galle Fort

    As you walk through the narrow lane of Galle Fort, there’s something magical about this UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws you in with its old world charm. This historic monument was built by the Portuguese, fortified by the Dutch and then taken over by the Brits. With so much to explore and experience, walking through Galle Fort and sightseeing all that’s around is quite an immersive experience.
