Finding Italy in Sri Lanka

Dec 12, 2019
Italian Art

Italian culture has seeped into the world’s tapestry and influenced architecture, art, food and more. The culture is found on the shores of Sri Lanka as well. There are elements and similarities weaved into the country, of Italian art, Italian architecture, Italian food and of course Italian atmosphere.

Art & Architecture

Lunuganga Estate

Italian art is world renowned and Lunuganga Estate, the home of celebrated architect Geoffrey Bawa, plays host to beautiful sculptures, one in particular seemingly inspired from the high renaissance period. The sculpture can be found on the North Terrace, with its back to the Dedduwa Lake. The gardens themselves are a testament to the tropical wilderness of Sri Lanka paired with Italian Renaissance classicism. It is spotted with pavilions, courtyards, statues and ponds which are all connected by pathways and passageways that meander through the gardens.

The estate is what influenced Geoffrey Bawa to move from the field of law to architecture and it is clear that Italy influenced his ideas and designs. Having resided there, he included elements of the architectural culture in Italy into the home that was his labour of love and all projects that followed. Passion and love are both terms that are synonymous with Italy and it is evident in the outcome of his efforts.

The Negombo Hamilton Canal has been named, as of recent, as Little Venice of Sri Lanka, drawing inspiration from the famous Italian canal system. These beautiful canals offer a pathway through the tropical coastal town of Negombo with lush greenery and fauna. It is Sri Lanka’s tropical version of the world famous canal system, and it is just as beautiful, romantic and enchanting.

The Galle Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – with its beautifully paved streets, timeless architecture, that comprises of decorated columns and sweeping arches reminds us so much of an Italian town that we decided to base our authentic Italian restaurant here. The beautiful sunsets and romantic atmosphere under the bluest skies during the day and star-filled skies at night, provide the perfect setting for an Italian restaurant that embraces romance, elegance and class.
