4 Day Trips to Take From Galle

Mar 15, 2022
Galle Fort

Have you explored all the charming attractions of Galle Fort already and wondering where’s the closest place you can visit next? Take a day trip from Galle to one of these nearby cities where you can engage in a variety of things to do, from swimming in calm waters of Wijaya Beach to exploring the wilderness of Yala National Park. At the end of your day, make your way back to AQUA Forte, in Galle Fort for a delightful Italian meal.

Wijaya Beach, Unawatuna

While there’s a small beach just below the Galle Lighthouse, it can get pretty crowded on weekends. So, hop in a tuk-tuk and drive down to Unawatuna. Wijaya Beach has gained popularity over the years for its famed ‘tree-rope’ swing and tempting blue waters. Spend a couple of hours swimming in these shallow, blue waters.

Bentota

Bentota is most famous for one thing – watersports. Depending on your thirst for adventure, you enjoy slow boat rides through rich mangroves or peaceful kayak rides along the river or speed on a jet ski along the Bentota River or bounce against the waves on a bright yellow banana boat!

Weligama

Interested in learning how to surf? Weligama’s the ideal spot for beginners who want to take up the challenge of surfing the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. There are plenty of surf schools dotted along the coast which offers board rentals and surf lessons so you can master the art in less than an hour! Weligama is also known for the famed stilt fisherman. You’d often see them perched – away from the surf area ofcourse – on stilts, patiently waiting for the catch of the day.

    Yala National Park

What’s a holiday to the island without a chance of spotting its exotic wildlife? Located a scenic 2.5 hours away from Galle, Yala National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers. You can catch the evening safari if you leave Galle Fort in the morning. Reach the park by 3PM – with a safari jeep and spend the next 3 hours until the park closes at 6PM, exploring the jungles of Sri Lanka. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a leopard, sloth bear or an elephant – sometimes, all 3! Remember to be quiet and patience during the safari and to never provoke the animals as they are wild and could seriously injure you and the vehicle.

If you have a few more days on the island, read our guide on other things to do around the Galle Fort.

After a day of exploring the wilderness of Yala, partaking a range of exciting watersports in Bentota, or surfing the azure waters of Weligama, head back to the Galle Fort to end your adventures. Enjoy a quiet scrumptious Italian dinner at AQUA Forte accompanied with a glass or two of exquisite Italian wines.
